Liz Hurley Talks Breast Cancer Awareness, Plus: How She Wants Ex-BF Steve Bing Remembered
“Extra's” Rachel Lindsey caught up with Elizabeth Hurley, who opened up about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and her late ex-boyfriend Steve Bing.
Looking back at why she wanted to get involved in breast cancer awareness, she said, “When my grandmother found her lump, she was too scared and too embarrassed and she didn't tell anyone.”
That was in 1992, and it motivated Hurley to join the Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Campaign, which continues to make advances. “Twenty-five years now, every year, we hear really good news from our researchers who've been part of every major development in diagnosis and treatment,” she said.
“Even though great strides have been made, every 15 seconds somewhere in the world a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer,” Hurley added.
Actress Kelly Preston lost her secret battle to breast cancer this year. Liz said, “It was desperately sad when she died. She hadn't spoken about it publicly. Some people do speak about when they're getting treatment… And yes, sadly, when someone in the public eye loses their lives to a disease like breast cancer, of course it does bring it home to people.”
Liz experienced her own loss when ex-boyfriend Steve Bing, the father of her son Damian, committed suicide in June.
She shared how she wants him to be remembered, saying, “He was a good man. He gave to so many good causes. He was a philanthropist at heart and when we were together, which was a very long time ago, more than 18 years ago, I loved him very much. So I really hope people will retain fond memories of him.”
