Savannah Guthrie Opens Up About Eye Complications and More Surgery
“Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie will undergo another surgery stemming from an injury last year.
Fans will recall that in November her now 3-year-old son Charley threw a toy train at her face, tearing her retina. She had surgery in December but has suffered complications.
Guthrie and her co-anchor Hoda Kotb appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” today, and Savannah gave Ellen an update.
The 48-year-old explained, “It's getting better. The surgery worked, but a lot of people have complications. I did too, so I have to have cataract surgery.”
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “During cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.”
Savannah can't undergo surgery right now, due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I can't have it until all of this has passed,” she said. “It's kind of funny, kind of not. I see, but I see blurry spots.”
Guthrie and her family are staying a few hours outside of New York City. She explained that she shoots the show in her basement, adding of her kids Vale, 5, and Charley, “They're upstairs, but if you listen carefully a lot of times you can hear, I would say, the pitter-patter of little feet, but it is more like 25 hyenas roaring through or scooters rolling back and forth. I feel really grateful to still do the job. Hoda is still at the studio holding down the fort.”
Hoda also gave an update on her upcoming wedding to fiancé Joel Schiffman, revealing it is likely postponed.
“We are guessing that it will [get postponed],” she said. “It was a destination wedding, which would mean people are getting on planes, so we were kind of holding out to see what could happen, but the destination that we were going to is turning into one of the hot spots, so it looks like we may have to postpone. We're kind of bummed about that because the place we were going was like our favorite place on earth. We love it there.”
Hoda, who announced her engagement in November 2019, added, “I know we should say, 'Who cares, it doesn't matter,' but we waited a long time, so I sure hope we get to have it.”
She also gushed over quarantining with Joel, saying, “I'm with the best person on earth. I know a thousand times over. Being cooped up, you know right away if you chose right, and I know I did.”
