John Cena & Nikki Bella Split: Who Called It Quits and Why

Star couple John Cena and Nikki Bella broke up just weeks before their wedding, and now sources are revealing who ended the relationship and why.

An insider tells People magazine that it was Nikki who broke up with John.

The source claimed that Cena acted like he was only getting married because it was what Bella wanted.

“[Nikki] doesn't need a pity proposal, a pity wedding, a pity husband. She's a phenomenal, tremendous woman,” the source said.

The pair had disagreed on topics like marriage and children in the past. In fact, a new teaser for the May 20 premiere of “Total Bellas” reveals that the issue of whether to start a family may have played a part in the breakup.

In the clip, Cena tells Nikki, “I would never force you not to be a mom.” Bella tells him through tears that she isn't sure she can sacrifice becoming a mother.

He responds, “I'm not sure we should go through with this.”

Fans were shocked when the couple announced the news on Sunday with a bittersweet Instagram post on Nikki's account.

"After much contemplation and 6 years of being together Nikki Bella and John Cena announced today their decision to separate as a couple," the simple statement read. "While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives."

John followed up with a tweet on Monday, writing, “Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate, but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way.”

The pair were scheduled to wed May 5 at a destination wedding in Mexico.
