Julie Bowen’s First Words After Splitting with Her Husband

Last night, “Extra's” Renee Bargh spoke to Julie Bowen on the red carpet for the Women's Cancer Research Fund's annual benefit in Beverly Hills.

It was Bowen's first public appearance since splitting from her husband of 13 years, Scott Phillips. She was on hand to support her friend and “Modern Family” co-star Sofía Vergara, who was being honored at the benefit.

Julie shared, “Sofía is a thyroid cancer survivor, and cancer is such a beast. We have to figure out how to attack this.”

As for what's coming up on their hit ABC sitcom, Julie teased, “We're finishing up the season... we might have a cliffhanger.”

Sofía almost had a fashion mishap on the carpet with her dress! She explained, “I was holding my husband I got tangled in the rug.”

While Vergara was moved by the honor, she wanted to bring attention to the organization's mission. She shared, “It's about trying to make a difference and bring awareness. We still need so much research and money to keep all of this going and to finally find a cure.”

Rita Wilson, who has been a longtime supporter of the organization, commented, “We've been hosting the event for over 20 years with the Spielbergs, and when we started it, there was no cure for cancer and there's still no cure for breast cancer. That's why we're still here raising money.”

Where will she be on Oscar night with husband Tom Hanks away on location shooting? Rita joked, “I'll be home in my sweatpants and a lovely T-shirt and watching it from the comfort of my own home. Sometimes it's fun to watch it from home. Who doesn't love a little Oscar viewing?”
