Nigel Lythgoe Weighs In on ‘American Idol’ Return

“American Idol's” return to ABC has been dominating headlines. “Extra's” Renee Bargh was with the show's former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe today as he hosted a Beverly Hills Commerce event just as news broke that Ryan Seacrest is in talks to return as host when the show comes back in 2018.
The executive producer, who is working hard on “So You Think You Can Dance,” gave his take on “Idol's” big return, saying, “It's very exciting for all the fans.”
Nigel said that so far, he has not been asked to participate in the reboot, adding, “We'll see what happens.”
Weighing in on Ryan's possible return to the reality show, Lythgoe said, “As long as Ryan can do it — you don't want to kill the poor guy. He's doing a radio show, he's doing 'Live with Kelly.' This airplane is going to be flying back and forth at God knows what speed…”
He continued, “He makes it look so easy and it isn't. He's got a lot of work to do if he's going to do it.”
Nigel also offered his opinion on Kelly Clarkson's name been thrown in the ring to possibly judge. “She's very smart and she's been through it herself," he noted. "I think she would make a great judge.”
Renee told Nigel that Demi Lovato just told her she wouldn't mind joining the show. Nigel liked the idea! “I saw Demi on a tribute to the Bee Gees — she was magnificent.”
