Report: Olivia Newton-John’s Ex Is Alive in Mexico with German Lover
After his mysterious disappearance more than 10 years ago, Olivia Newton-John's onetime boyfriend Patrick McDermott may be alive and living in rural Mexico.
In 2005, the former cameraman vanished on a fishing trip off the coast of San Pedro, California. The Coast Guard was unable to find his body after an extensive search, and it was declared that he most likely drowned.
Despite that finding, investigator Philip Klein claimed McDermott faked his death and was living in Mexico in 2009. He had filed for bankruptcy shortly before his disappearance, was reportedly $30,000 in debt, and was behind on child support for his son, Chance, with ex-wife Yvette Nipar.
Klein received a fax from someone, allegedly speaking on behalf of McDermott, who confirmed he was alive and asked that he be left alone. According to Daily Mail, the fax reportedly said, "Pat has asked that I portray to you his innocence. Pat has committed no crime. Pat simply wishes to be left alone. Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both physically and mentally. Stop this search immediately."
Klein also revealed that he had connected with someone claiming to be McDermott's lawyer. He shared, "His attorney called from Mexico City and said that Patrick didn't want to be bothered. He hadn't faked anything. He just wanted to get away from the drama."
More clues have surfaced that favor the theory that McDermott is still alive and somewhere in Mexico. Investigator John Nazarian recently told Woman's Day, "It's rumored he was with a German national. I spoke to people there. The girl he was traveling with was described as having a German accent."
He added, "To come up with the conclusion that he fell off the boat, and allegedly no one saw him fall off the boat, is the most preposterous thing I've ever heard in my life.”
Olivia has been largely silent about McDermott's disappearance. One year after he vanished, she was asked in an interview about the possibility that he was still alive. She responded, "We'd be thrilled if it was true."
Newton has moved on from the relationship and is now married to John Esterling, the founder of Amazon Herb Company.
