'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Breaking Box-Office Records
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is not just number one at the box office, it's breaking every possible record.
It boasts the top-earning preview of all time, with $57 million earned. According to Disney's estimates, this seventh film in the series will rake in about $125 million for its opening day, the first time a movie has ever had a triple-digit million single day. That means it leaves the opening day for the last "Harry Potter" film ($91.1 million) in the dust.
Next up is the record for opening weekend, currently held by "Jurassic World" at $208 million; "Star Wars" could make as much as $220 million when the space-dust settles. If that happens, it will be a lock for "Star Wars" to take the shortest period of time any movie ever has to break the $250-million mark.
For those of you keeping track, here are all the exact numbers and records "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has smashed:
· Biggest Thursday preview gross with $57M.
· Biggest Friday and biggest single-day gross with $120.5M.
· First film ever to post a single day over $100M.
· Fastest film to $100M and $200M.
· Biggest December debut (nearly 3 times previous record of $84.6M).
· Biggest IMAX Thursday night preview ($5.7M), single-day ($14M, Friday), and weekend ($30.1M).
· Highest theater average for a wide release ($57,568).
Will this "Star Wars" surpass the overall domestic take of "Avatar," which is currently the highest-grossing film of all time? It's off to a great start — the movie has to top $749.8 million.
