Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin: What Caused the Split?

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and singer Chris Martin, 37, dropped a bombshell on Goop.com Tuesday, announcing their decision to “consciously uncouple” after 10 years of marriage and two kids.

Now, fans are left wondering what caused the separation and if the twosome will divorce. Clues point to distance and busy schedules as contributing factors.

The couple has always split their time between the UK and L.A., and there is no doubt their schedules have been demanding in recent months. People reports that Chris has been busy working on an album with Coldplay and agreed to join “The Voice” as a mentor. Gwyneth completed filming her new movie “Mortdecai” in January, and filmed the 100th episode of “Glee.”

Gwyneth has also spoken about the ups and down of marriage, telling Glamour in 2013 that life could be difficult with her “mad scientist” husband. “It's hard being married,” she said. "You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We're the same as any couple.”

She added, “I asked my dad once, 'How did you and Mum stay married for 33 years?' And he said, 'Well, we never wanted to get divorced at the same time.' And I think that's what happens."

While there have been rumors that Martin cheated on Paltrow, an insider told People the gossip is “ridiculous,” adding, “She doesn't care what people think. She really doesn't, she knows the truth."

No matter what, the couple -- parents to Apple, 9, and Moses, 7 -- will put family first.

In their joint statement they insisted, "We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."
