Stephen Furst, Flounder from 'Animal House,' Dead at 62
Stephen Furst, the actor best known as lovable loser Flounder in the 1978 film "National Lampoon's Animal House," has died at 62, TMZ reports.
Furst's sons Nathan and Griffith Furst announced their father's death from complications of diabetes on his official Facebook page, writing, "Steve has a long list of earthly accomplishments. He was known to the world as an brilliant and prolific actor and filmmaker, but to his family and many dear friends he was also a beloved husband, father and kind friend whose memory will always be a blessing."
They urged fans not to cry for their dad, but instead to "enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laugher is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now."
Furst recreated his famous role as Kent "Flounder" Dorfman from "Animal House" in the short-lived spin-off TV series "Delta House" in 1979. He went on to recurring roles on the '80s drama "St. Elsewhere" and on the sci-fi series "Babylon 5," and starred in the cult-classic 1980 comedy "Midnight Madness."
A number of Furst's co-stars memorialized him on social media after the surprising news of his passing:
I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of my friend Steven Furst. A kind heart , great talent and beautiful human being.
