Nick Cannon Has Confidence in Kevin Hart After Oscars Controversy
Nick Cannon is back on TV, hosting the new “The Masked Singer” on FOX.
Along with discussing his return to TV, “Extra's” Renee Bargh sat down with Cannon, who defended his friend Kevin Hart over past homophobic tweets.
The 38-year-old has been open about his support for Hart, who stepped down from hosting the 2019 Oscars after being called out for the tweets and for controversial aspects of his stand-up act. In addition to calling out Amy Schumer, Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman for using gay slurs in past tweets and never suffering clapback, Cannon revealed he has spoken to Kevin “every day.” He emphasized, “I mean he has a lot of other jobs, he'll be alright… he's going to be fine.”
Earlier this week, Whoopi Goldberg endorsed “The Masked Singer” judge Ken Jeong as a potential Oscars host. Nick approved of the idea, saying, “He would be awesome… He's perfect. I think it should happen.”
When Renee suggested Nick himself should host, he laughed, saying, “I got too much dirt on me. They're gonna start digging for me. It's gonna be a problem.”
Renee also chatted with Jeong about the possibility of hosting the Oscars. He said, “I don't know. I don't know if they want me to do it or Mr. Chow. 'Hi, welcome to the Oscars..' I don't know if they want that.”
Of hosting "The Masked Singer," Cannon shared, “I actually told myself that I wasn't going to host any more shows. I was over it after 'AGT' and then… found out about this. I was like, 'This is worth getting back in front of the camera hosting.'”
The show features celebrities singing in a head-to-toe costume and face mask to conceal their identities from other contestants, the panelists, and the audience. Nick was “blown away” by the concept, saying, “Everything that you're going to see... this season... truly is like something that's never been on television before.”
“The Masked Singer” premieres January 2.
