In July, LeBron opened up about opening the doors to the I Promise School, saying, “As a kid from Akron, Ohio, myself, I remember walking these same streets. I remember walking North Street. Market… I know the streets they walk. I know the trials and tribulations they are going through. I know the ups and the downs. I know everything they dream about. All the nightmares that they have. Because I've been there. I know exactly what they are going through. They are the reason why this school is here today.”
“I just want people to know that it doesn't matter as a kid growing up in the inner city… and me specifically growing up here Akron, Ohio… being underprivileged and feeling that you can become a statistic,” James emphasized. “By me being able to put something like this together I want people to know that these kids should have the same opportunity as everyone else. And that's what's most important.”
