Best Moments from SAG Awards: Diversity Rules
On Saturday, diversity took center stage at the 2016 SAG Awards.
The “Orange Is the New Black” cast took home the Best Comedy Ensemble award for the second year in a row. Laura Prepon, who wore Stephen Webster earrings, said to the crowd while accepting the award with the cast, "Look at this stage! This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity: different race, color, creed, and sexual orientation.”
“The Danish Girl” actress Alicia Vikander and “Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor thanked the transgender community while accepting their awards.
Idris Elba, who was not nominated for an Oscar, took home the Best Supporting Male Actor award for “Beasts of No Nation” and Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for “Luther.” Though he didn't address the Oscar controversy during his acceptance speeches, he did joke during the telecast after Viola Davis' Best Female Actress in a Drama series win, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to diverse TV.”
Elba and Davis weren't the only black stars to win — Queen Latifah (“Bessie”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”) also won in their TV categories.
Another highlight of the night was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reuniting to honor Carol Burnett with the Life Achievement Award. Amy and Tina's banter while hosting the Golden Globes from 2012 to 2015 grabbed loads of attention, but this was their first time sharing a stage together at an awards show this season.
