Harvey Weinstein Accuser Caitlin Dulany Reacts to Verdict
Caitlin Dulany, an alleged victim of Harvey Weinstein, joined “Extra's” Jenn Lahmers on set right after the verdict came down in his historic case.
Weinstein, who has always maintained his innocence, was found guilty of criminal sexual assault in the first degree and rape in the third degree on Monday morning, and is facing up to 29 years in prison. He was convicted on two of the five charges against him but was found not guilty on two counts of predatory sexual assault and of rape in the first degree.
Caitlin, who is part of a class-action lawsuit against the mogul, started Voices in Action with another accuser, Jessica Barth. The organization works to provide protection and safety from sexual misconduct.
Dulany told Jenn she was feeling “really emotional, completely thrilled and almost like I couldn't believe it was happening. I can't believe after all these years of harming women and hurting women, we can finally see justice.”
She added, “All weekend I was on pins and needles.”
“First of all, the fact that they found him guilty of harming both of those woman, I am really happy and surprised by that… It's really, really meaningful to me and to all of us,” Dulany said, calling it “justice.”
She said the verdict made it more real for her, explaining, “That's probably why I feel so many emotions that I am feeling, 'cause it's real. This man is really going to jail and will forever be known as a convicted serial rapist… It's still sinking in… It changes everything, it's really historic.”
She continued, “This man who harmed me so many years ago... is actually going to jail.”
Dulany is also a part of a group of women known as the Silence Breakers, who have come forward to report Weinstein's misconduct. They released a statement today, saying, “While it is disappointing that today's outcome does not deliver the true, full justice that so many women deserve, Harvey Weinstein will now forever be known as a convicted serial predator. This conviction would not be possible without the testimony of the courageous women and the many women who have spoken out. Despite intimidation from Weinstein's legal team, they courageously shared their stories with the jury, the courtroom and the world. This has been a flawed process from the beginning but has further exposed the difficulties women face in coming forward to tell the truth about powerful abusers. Their bravery will forever be remembered in history. Our fight is far from over. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has brought charges against Weinstein and we hope he will be met with swift justice. As we have said from our very first statement together as Silence Breakers: we refuse to be silenced and will continue to speak out until this unrepentant abuser is brought to justice.”
