Trump Continues to Court Controversy with Paris Remarks
Continuing a pro-gun message that led to controversy when he tweeted about the Charlie Hebdo massacre in January, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump fired up a rally in Beaumont, Texas, on Saturday by stating his belief that the victims in Friday's attacks should have been armed.
In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, Trump said:
"When you look at Paris, toughest gun laws in the world, nobody had guns but the bad guys. Nobody had guns. And they were just shooting them one by one, and then they broke in and had a big shootout and ultimately killed the terrorists. And I will tell you what — you can say what you want, if they had guns, if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry, it would have been a much, much different situation."
Gerard Araud, the French ambassador to the U.S., tweeted that Trump's call for more guns in France was "repugnant in its lack of any human decency."
