Alec Baldwin’s Surprising Confession About Playing President Trump on ‘SNL'
On Thursday, only “Extra” was with Alec Baldwin as he prepared to host “Saturday Night Live” for a record-breaking seventeenth time this weekend.
“Extra” correspondent Hilaria Baldwin, Alec's wife, went behind the scenes of “SNL,” where he got candid about being on the show and taking on the role of playing President Donald Trump. “I enjoy being a part of it,” he said, before admitting, “Playing him is not a lot of fun. He's tense, he's angry, he's pissed off, and that's not fun to play.”
Baldwin was hoping that Trump would have settled down a little more once he won the election, sharing, “The president sets a tone.”
Hilaria pointed out that her husband is stopped by fans more than ever now, with people showing their appreciation for his work on “SNL.” Alec responded, “People, they need to laugh, they are upset… There are a lot of things we need to tend to urgently regardless of who's president. A critical mass of people are wondering is the right guy in office to address these important issues.”
Alec went on to explain that he's just playing off of what the President is saying. “Another thing I find that's so weird about the stuff we're doing, we're just repeating back what he says… Doing this is strange, but what is even more strange is this is real.”
At the Super Bowl, White House press secretary Sean Spicer told “Extra's” AJ Calloway that Alec's rendition of Trump was “mean.” Alec commented, “What is he supposed to say? All those guys are working for Trump; they work for the President, and they are going to say what they need to say to fit in…That's symbolic of where we're at — we repeat back everything that Trump says.”
Despite the criticism from Trump's administration, Alec looked back at all the times he has hosted the hit show, calling the streak amazing. He said, “I'm so grateful for [producer] Lorne [Michaels] to have me back to host the show — I'm really excited.” Smiling when asked what has changed over the years, Baldwin said, “We have three children, so I am exhausted. It's fun, it's very unique, it's the only place you can do this, it's live so there is a little tension there… It's silly.”
Tune in to “Extra” tomorrow for more of Alec's interview!
