UPDATE: Cowell is recovering after a five-hour surgery that entailed having a metal rod inserted into his back. His rep told People: "Simon had surgery overnight and is doing okay this morning. It was a five-hour surgery and he has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back."
"America's Got Talent's" Simon Cowell broke his back Saturday in an accident involving his new electric bike, he told People magazine.
A rep for Cowell, 60, explained Saturday that he had "broken his back and will be having surgery this evening."
It happened when "Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family."
Cowell had been in lockdown with his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, their 6-year-old son Eric, and her 14-year-old son Adam.
He had been set to shoot the first live "AGT" on Tuesday at Universal Studios to kick off the series' 15th season, but that plan will not be happening.
Both Heidi Klum and Sofía Vergara have posted an image of the set with Simon's empty chair, wishing him well in comments.
