Kim Kardashian’s Initial Reaction to Kanye West’s Slavery Comments: ‘I Wasn’t So Calm’
On Monday night, “Extra's” AJ Calloway spoke to Kim Kardashian at the 2018 CFDA Fashion Awards, where she was honored with the Influencer Award.
Kim recently showed her support for husband Kanye West at his listening party in Wyoming. She said, “The fact that everyone came to Wyoming, which has been Kanye's happy place and his place away from it all, was really cool that everyone else got to experience that.”
As for her initial reaction to his new song “Wouldn't Leave,” which addresses his controversial comments on slavery, Kim revealed, “I cried because it is a lot of what we went through... I know my husband has the best intentions. He has the biggest heart.”
Kanye recently argued that slavery was a choice, remarks that drew widespread condemnation from fans and fellow performers. Kim admitted that she reacted with “screams” but emphasized, “I know his heart, so I know he'll always have that chance to explain himself when the time is right.”
Though she credited Kanye for keeping her calm, Kim smiled, saying, “This time I wasn't so calm... I know what he meant so ultimately, after a week, I was calm... I think he explained it well in the song.”
Last week, Kardashian met with President Trump to discuss prison reform and push for the release of Alice Marie Johnson, who is serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug-related crime.
Of their conversation, Kim said, “I feel really hopeful. I feel like what I had to say, hopefully, was impactful. I'm just praying for the best. I think everyone definitely heard me and we'll see what happens.”
She added, “Change is starting.”
During her visit to Washington, D.C., Kim also had dinner with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. She shared, “They were so nice to me and very receptive to the idea [of prison reform]... We talked about it afterwards and just seeing what we can do about it to move forward. I think the goal is to get justice for as many people as possible.”
Over the weekend, Kim had an early birthday celebration for daughter North, who is turning 5 next week. The mom of three said of her expanded family, “Three is wild.”
