Debra Messing Calls Out Ivanka Trump at GLAAD Awards
Debra Messing, who will appear in new episodes of her classic sitcom "Will & Grace" this September, made a glittering appearance at the 28th GLAAD Media Awards in NYC Saturday evening, where she accepted the Excellence in Media Award and made a personal plea to Ivanka Trump.
Dressed in a coppery pantsuit, her signature red hair swept back dramatically from her face, Debra kicked off her speech by Messing around — teasing that the most iconic gay series in which she'd ever starred had been "Smash." Of that show, she joked, "I believe that we taught the country about high camp and big scars without ever seeming preachy."
She went on to say she agrees with Vice President Joe Biden, who in 2012 said "Will & Grace" had shifted public perception on the issue of gay marriage. Messing proclaimed, "It is time to make America gay again! I mean, someone's gotta take down Mother Pence. Talk about a low-hanging fruit."
Moving on from the stand-up portion of her acceptance speech, Messing called out Ivanka Trump directly, saying, "Ivanka, girlfriend, whaddaya doin'? C'mon, it's me, Deb — one Jewish mother to another. It is not enough to simply say that women's issues are important to you. It's time to do something... Ivanka, please, please stop blindly defending your father and start defending what you say you believe in."
Saying to Ivanka — who was not in attendance — that fighting for justice "will make you feel richer than owning all the skyscrapers and golf courses in the world," Messing said on a conciliatory note, "The country wants to support you."
