What a Hung Jury Means for Jodi Arias' Sentencing
After a four-month retrial and days of deliberations, a jury could not decide on a sentence for Jodi Arias.
The hung jury means the death penalty is off the table, and Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens will have to decide between a life sentence or life sentence with the chance of parole. She will hand down her decision on April 13.
The killer, who stabbed and shot her boyfriend Travis Alexander to death in 2008, kept her composure as Stephens read the verdict and declared the mistrial, while members of Alexander's family loudly sobbed in a very emotional courtroom.
Arias was convicted of murder in May 2013, but the jury could not decide on a punishment, resulting in a retrial of the penalty phase.
