Jon Bernthal Reveals He Dropped Out of ‘First Man’ Because His 2-Year-Old Was in a Coma
“The Punisher” star Jon Bernthal is opening up about a scary health emergency in 2017 that left his daughter in a coma.
In the January/Februrary issue of Men's Health, Bernthal reveals he dropped out of “First Man” after his then 2-year-old daughter Adeline suffered a seizure and fell into a coma.
Bernthal, who was cast as Dave Scott in "First Man," told the magazine he panicked, but his wife Erin Angle, a trauma nurse, held it together, “pouring love into our daughter every step of the way.”
Jon and Erin later learned Adeline had a potentially deadly viral infection called encephalitis, which causes brain swelling.
After three days in a coma, Adeline woke up, but she didn't recognize her family. Thankfully, the toddler has now made a full recovery.
Jon praised his wife for the way she handled the scare. “People talk about bravery like fake macho bravery, but my wife didn't flinch,” he said. “What I saw in my wife was courage and beauty unlike I'd ever seen.”
Bernthal is also "Dad" to Henry, 7, and Billy, 5. He says being a father is his most important role, and he wants his kids to take on sports, music, and schoolwork with “the exact same level of fierceness.”
“Whatever they do in this world, I'm okay with it, as long as they go full bore,” the “Walking Dead” alum said. “That's the real challenge of fatherhood, to try to divorce yourself from your own bullsh-t and to realize, 'I want these kids to be better than me. I don't want them to make the same mistakes I did.'”
