Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Throw More Verbal Jabs at Fundraiser
Last night, the gloves were off at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City, where Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton took verbal digs at each other in their speeches.
Trump was prepared with some one-liners, some of which were received with disapproval from the attendees, even drawing boos upon declaring his rival “corrupt.”
“This is the first time ever, ever, that Hillary is sitting down, speaking to major corporate leaders and not getting paid for it,” he quipped.
The fundraiser, meant to raise money for the network Catholic Charities, became another opportunity for the opponents to joust, albeit in the name of humor. “People look at the Statue of Liberty and they see a proud symbol… a beacon of hope for people around the world,” Clinton said, “Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a four. Maybe a five if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair.” It was a joke that played on leaked lewd comments Trump made about women in 2007.
While Hillary's husband Bill was not in attendance, Melania was present, supporting Donald.
Hillary and Donald frequently smiled and laughed at each other's jokes. One gesture they made last night that was absent in the final two debates — the candidates actually shook hands this time!
