‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star Chi Chi DeVayne Dead at 34
Fans of “RuPaul's Drag Race” are mourning the death of contestant Chi Chi DeVayne, who has passed away at age 34.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed her death, but no cause was given.
The tragic news comes days after she posted a video from the hospital asking fans on social media to “keep me in your prayers." EW reports she was previously hospitalized in July for high blood pressure and suspected kidney failure. DeVayne, however, was released.
The reality star, born Zavion Davenport, competed on Season 8 of “RuPaul's Drag Race” and Season 3 of “RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars.”
DeVayne's family released a statement on her Instagram account, sharing, "It is with tremendous sorrow that my family and I announce the passing of my beloved son, Zavion Michael Davenport, the world renowned 'Chi Chi DeVayne'... his final words to his family and fans, 'Never give up!'"
RuPaul remembered Chi Chi on Twitter, writing, “I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Chi Chi DeVayne. I am so grateful that we got to experience her kind and beautiful soul. She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. May her generous and loving spirit shine down on us all. On behalf of VH1, World of Wonder and the cast and crew of RuPaul's Drag Race, I extend my deepest sympathy - from our family to hers.”
Former contestants paid tribute too. Jaida Essence Hall wrote on Instagram, “An angel! Can't believe this,” and Shea Coulee shared, “I'm literally so devastated and sick to my stomach. Wake me up when it's all over.”
