Though much was unknown about the accident initially, the police report has now been released. In the papers, obtained by People magazine, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards revealed that the accident happened before 3 p.m. on Sunday on family property. In contrast to initial reports that Jamie Lynn had not been present, the accident reportedly happened right in front of her and her husband Jamie Watson.
The report states Maddie was trying to steer away from a drainage ditch before the accident. "In doing so, she overcorrected, causing the ATV to enter the pond. The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes.”
Spears and Watson immediately rushed to the pond. "Within seconds, the child's mother, stepfather and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV's safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.”
The report closed by noting, “This is an extremely tragic accident. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office is asking you to keep this family in your constant prayers as they try to cope with this horrible incident. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time of need.”
One day after the accident, Jamie Lynn's sister Britney Spears took to Twitter to ask for prayers, tweeting, "Need all the wishes and prayers for my niece.” People magazine reports that Britney has flown to Louisiana to be by Maddie's side.
TMZ reports Maddie is currently in critical, but stable, condition. Over a year ago, Jamie posted a seventh-birthday video of Maddie being surprised with an ATV that matches the one in which she had her accident.

On Tuesday, a family friend William Parson, owner of Kentwood's The Cafe, gave a health update, telling Radar, "We are all praying she gets better. The family said this morning she is responding well, which is good news. But it's hard to say if she's going to be okay at this stage.”
