Shepard quit cocaine and alcohol 16 years ago and has been mostly sober since then. Dax explained that he had relapsed with painkillers in the past and it happened again this summer.
The star, who was in an off-roading accident in May and then a motorcycle accident in August, said he started taking Vicodin for some injuries.
He got hooked and was taking “them all day,” adding, “you know, eight 30s a day.”
Shepard realized he had a problem, explaining, “I know that's an amount that's going to result in a pretty bad withdrawal. And I start getting really scared, and I'm starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret.”
He eventually revealed the truth to wife Kristen Bell and podcast co-host Monica Padman and said he felt “grateful” to have their support. When he opened up about his addiction in an AA meeting, he broke down crying.
Dax is now 11 days sober, and said he felt “very proud that I haven't drank [alcohol] or done cocaine in 16 years.”
