Biggest Moments from the 2020 SAG Awards
The stars were out on Sunday for the 2020 Screen Actor's Guild Awards!
The show was full of laughs and some emotional moments, too, as actors celebrated their own.
The ceremony kicked off in the usual way, with actors in the crowd explaining how they earned their SAG cards. The opening, however, took a hilarious turn when it was Eugene Levy's turn. Like a typical dad, he went on and on, specifically about how he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the "Don't squeeze the Charmin!" guy, Mr. Whipple, a hometown hero. As part of the gag, his son Dan Levy even stepped in to try to get his dad to wrap it up.
One of the first awards was handed out to Tony Shalhoub for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” He dedicated his award to a co-star who died from an overdose in November, ending his speech, “I will dedicate this to one of our family who we lost this year, who we miss terribly, the most marvelous Brian Tarantina. My brother, here is to you.”
The cast of “Mrs. Maisel” went on to win the coveted award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Brad Pitt lightened the mood as he accepted Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.”
Pitt poked fun at his love life, saying, “I got to add this to my Tinder profile.” He went on to joke about his role as Cliff Booth, saying, “Let's be honest, this was a tough part: A guy who gets high, takes his shirt off, and doesn't get on with his wife. It was a big stretch.” After his joke, the camera cut to ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, who was seen clapping in her seat.
He also teased director Quentin Tarantino's shots of feet in his films, joking, “Seriously, Quentin Tarantino has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA."
Aniston took home her own trophy, for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role on “The Morning Show.” Jen gave an emotional speech, and offered an unexpected shout-out to friend and "Murder Mystery" co-star Adam Sandler, who is currently starring in “Uncut Gems.” Though he failed to score a SAG nomination for his work in "Uncut Gems," she told him, "Adam Sandler, your performance is extraordinary and your magic is real, buddy. I love you."
Michelle Williams included a special message in her acceptance speech for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for her work in “Fosse/Verdon.”
The actress, who is expecting a baby with fiancé Thomas Kail, said, “Tommy, like everything else in our life, I share this [award] with you." She went on, “And Matilda, it's one thing to be completely honest as an actor — it's another thing to be completely honest as a human being.”
Matilda is Michelle's 14-year-old daughter with her late ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger.
Ledger also received a mention in Joaquin Phoenix's speech when he won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for “Joker.”
One of Heath's final roles was playing the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” and Joaquin noted he was “standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor, Heath Ledger.”
The show got political as Robert De Niro took the stage to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award. Quoting himself from a recent interview with Variety, he told the crowd, “There's right and there's wrong. And there's common sense and there's abuse of power. And as a citizen, I have as much right as anybody — an actor, an athlete, a musician, anybody else — to voice my opinion. And if I have a bigger voice because of my situation, I'm going to use it whenever I see a blatant abuse of power.”
The night ended with a big win for “Parasite,” marking the first time a foreign-language film has earned a SAG for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble award. Park So-dam, Lee Sun-kyun, Choi Woo-shik, Lee Jung-eun and Song Kang-ho took the stage to accept, while their director Bong Joon-ho proudly watched from the crowd.
