Oprah Winfrey on Orlando Mass Shooting, Presidential Election, and Tonys Win
Fresh off winning a Tony for “The Color Purple,” Oprah Winfrey headed straight for Washington, D.C., where she participated in the United State of Women Summit with none other than First Lady Michelle Obama. Last night, Oprah spoke to “Extra's” AJ Calloway while debuting her latest OWN project, “Greenleaf,” in Los Angeles.
The always eloquent Winfrey had a difficult time expressing her feelings over the deadliest mass shooting in our country's history, which took place in Orlando over the weekend. “What can you say about it? I think until the country is ready to come to a sense of consciousness about what we're doing and allowing with assault weapons... And I think both sides have a point. I hear the other side that [say], 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people.' That is true. But could we just agree that having assault weapons… could we just agree on that? Could we just start with somewhere? Could we say as conscious people in the world who care about other people, ya know, 'Do what Australia did in 1995 or 1996?' After they had that massive shooting, in weeks they banned assault weapons. So I think that would be a good start."
She added, “Let's not have those. Everybody, keep your guns, but do we have to have them fire 50 [rounds] at a time? That doesn't seem logical to me.”
What is logical for Oprah is seeing Hillary Clinton become the first female president. “I really think it's gonna happen... She's the most qualified. Period."
When asked about the other candidate, Donald Trump, Oprah responded, “I'm only talking about the people I am supporting.”
Oprah was still beaming over her big Tony win, singing, “I have a Tony, I have a Tony.” She smiled, saying, “Y'all haven't sent it yet, though. I'm waitin' on it.”
She also reflected on bringing “The Color Purple” to Broadway, not only once but twice, and raved over the show's overnight sensation Cynthia Erivo, who took the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. She gushed, “I was happiest for her.” Her happiness turned to nervousness when the Best Musical Revival category came up. She shared, “And I started thinking about, 'What do I do with my purse? Can I get up the stairs? Oh, my God, am I gonna slip? I shouldn't have worn these shoes. I should've scraped them on the bottom.' And then they said, 'Color Purple,' I couldn't even get out of the seat. 'Should I get up first? I'm not the one. I shouldn't get up.' So anyway, it was fun.”
The media mogul also had wonderful compliments for Tonys host James Corden, saying, “And I thought, 'James Corden… what a career-elevating moment, your career is going nuh, nuh, nuh, nuh and then that happens and it's like voom… That was a trajectory-changing moment, James.'”
