Halle Berry on Shutting Down Pregnancy Rumors, Her New Movie 'Kidnap,' and More
“Extra's” Terri Seymour caught up with Halle Berry at Chivas Regal's The Venture pitch event in L.A.
The star revealed she has had one busy summer with her kids, Nahla, 9, and Maceo, 3, saying, “I'm having a great time. Summer always goes too fast when you're a mom with two children, but we're making the best of it.”
She is making the best of awkward situations as well. Halle recently took to social media to shut down pregnancy rumors by telling fans she wasn't pregnant — she had just eaten steak and fries. “It happens, you know? You eat too much before an event and you become pregnant.” Terri noted, “People don't make comments like that to men, do they?” Halle answered smiling, “I'm not saying they don't, but I haven't come across a comment of someone talking about a man's 'pooch.'”
The actress also clarified comments she made during a recent Teen Vogue interview, in which she said of her 2002 Oscar win, “I sat there and I really thought, 'Wow, that moment really meant nothing.'"
Berry explained to Terri, “I hope my comments haven't been taken out of context. I didn't mean the Oscar meant nothing — it meant everything to me, it changed my life, and I think it inspired an industry… People of color have been able to infiltrate the business and actually work in the business and that's a win… We're winning because we are working in a way that we never were before.”
She went on, “What I meant by that statement is that I am heartbroken it has been 15 years and no other women of color have stood by me in that category, and I really thought that night that that particular change in that category was coming soon, and I will keep wanting to see someone else stand there and I will keep hoping we, as women and people of color, that we stay hopeful and not become jaded.”
The 50-year-old star is getting ready to premiere her new film “Kidnap,” saying, “I have been waiting for this moment for two years. It has been a passion project of mine. It was a movie when I read it I felt I had to do it, because it's about female empowerment. It's about 'moms unite,' it's about the power of a lion, bear mother who will stop at nothing to save and protect her children, and I can relate to that. I go for no tomorrow for my kids wherever I have to and make no apologies for that.”
Halle added that the movie strikes many emotions. “It's a human question: What would you do if you saw a child in danger, how far would you go? It's a thrilling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat action movie.”
Berry was at the Chivas Regal The Venture pitch event as a celebrity judge as they searched for the next generation of entrepreneur, with the winner receiving $1 million. “It's super exciting because what Chivas is doing is so amazing, I can't think of any big-business liquor company that is doing what they are doing, that is giving back the way they are giving back by giving young minds, young people, entrepreneurial minds, an opportunity to do good on a social level and really incite social change — it's really exciting.”
Berry admitted she has been pitched some crazy ideas over the years! “A tennis shoe that has space for six toes," she remembered, smiling, "because there was a rumor that I had six toes on both of my feet. I want to set that straight. So many people think I have six toes, which I do not have six toes.”
