Jada Pinkett Smith Confirms Past Relationship with August Alsina While on a Marriage Break
Jada Pinkett Smith made a stunning admission on her “Red Table Talk” Friday, confirming that she did have a relationship with singer August Alsina, explaining that it was while she was on a break with husband Will Smith.
The star sat down with Will to discuss what transpired when they met August four years ago.
Jada explained, “I started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends. It just started with him needing some help, me wanting to help his health, his mental state.”
Will added, “For me, when Aug first came around, he was really sick… The outpouring from our family was initially about this health.”
It was around that time that Jada and Will decided to split up. Will told her with a smile, “I was done with your ass. I was done with you. Marriages have that though.” Jada added, “We broke up.”
Will asked, “Then what did you do, Jada?”
She explained, “As time went on, I got into a different entanglement with August.”
When Will called her out for calling it an “entanglement,” she answered, “Yeah, it was a relationship, absolutely. I was in a lot of pain and I was very broken and in the process of that relationship I definitely realized that you can't find happiness outside of yourself.”
Jada said she doesn't view it as a “transgression,” adding that she learned a lot in the process.
She went on, “I just wanted to feel good. It had been so long since I felt good and it was really a joy to help heal somebody. I think that has a lot to do with my co-dependency. Which is something I had to learn to fix... being drawn to people who need help… there is something about that childhood trauma that feels as though it can be fixed through fixing people versus fixing me, and I think that whole process with Aug showed me that and taught me that and I'm really grateful for that lesson.”
Jada explained how things ended with Alsina, saying, “As I came through and started to realize certain things about you and I, he decided to break all communication with me, which was totally understandable. I let that be and hadn't talked to him since so it is a little weird that all this is coming out now.”
She also wanted to clear up reports that Will had given his permission or blessing, saying, “The only person who could give permission in that circumstance is myself.” Will concurred, saying, “Yes, exactly.”
She went on to talk about her marriage, saying, “Luckily enough, you and I were also going through a process of healing in a much different manner. I would definitely say we did everything we could to get away from each other only to realize that that wasn't possible.”
Later on, she addressed her relationship with Will again, saying, “I'm grateful for the journey that you and I have had together because I feel like there are a lot of couples that go through those periods… One thing I will say about you and I is that there has never been secrets.”
She called their love “unconditional,” and Will told her, smiling, “I wasn't sure if I was ever going to speak to you again.” She replied, “I know.” He insisted, “The fact that I'm speaking to you again is a miracle.” She told him, “I would agree.”
They ended the chat with Jada saying, “We ride together,” and Will adding “We die together,” and in unison, “Bad marriage for life!”
Last week, Alsina, 27, made headlines when he told Angela Lee on YouTube about his relationship with Jada, saying, "I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership… he gave me his blessing.”
