Bindi Irwin, 21, and Chandler Powell, 22, got hitched!
Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the pair made the “difficult decision” to tie the knot without any guests at Australia Zoo.
On Wednesday, Bindi shared a photo, writing on Instagram, “March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding.”
“This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos,” she went on. “Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.”
As for their special day, Bindi shared, “Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this — stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!”
The ”finally married” Chandler shared the same photo, writing, “Today, March 25, 2020, marks the most amazing day of my life. I married my best friend. After almost a year of planning, we changed everything so that we could enjoy a safe and small private ceremony at our home, Australia Zoo. As we embark on this new life chapter I hope that we can share some love in the world, especially during this challenging time.”
The wedding comes less than a year after he proposed on her 21st birthday.
Along with showing off her ring, Bindi tweeted, “On my birthday I said ‘yes’ & ‘forever’ to the love of my life. Chandler, close to 6 years ago I fell in love with you & every day since has been a whirlwind of adventure & true happiness. Here’s to a lifetime of friendship, purpose & unconditional love.”
Powell opened up about his proposal, telling People magazine, “After Bindi’s birthday celebration at Australia Zoo, we had a photoshoot organized to celebrate her turning 21. Just before we started the shoot, I took her to a special part of Australia Zoo to ask the girl of my dreams to become my wife. These past five years together have been the best of my life and we look forward to a lifetime of magical moments to come.”
The pair have been together since 2013 after they “hit it off” at Australia Zoo. In 2018, Chandler shared with the outlet, “It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day. I’m like, ‘Wow she is amazing.’ We haven’t looked back since.”
Of her beau, Bindi noted he shared some qualities with her late dad, saying, “He loves wildlife and conservation and he has this strength. Which is necessary when you’re jumping on crocs.”
Bindi lost her father in 2006 when she was only 8. Steve Irwin died when a stingray pierced his chest, injuring his heart, while he was filming a news program.
