Along with sharing photos from their paradise vacation, Val stressed the importance of being grateful. He said, “gratitude is truly an essential ingredient to happiness, and I don't think there is ever enough of it. I struggle with anxiety and doubt almost on a daily basis. It comes in waves. Even in paradise, even alongside my true love, even with my health, and the luxury of streaming the last episode of G.o.T., there is still a periodical feeling of... Whatever that feeling is, I find action and a reminder of gratitude to be the remedy.”

Val popped the question in June when they were spending time in Venice, Italy. He told People magazine, “When I was 17, I visited Venice for the first time and thought it was the most romantic place in the world. I promised myself then that the next time I would come back to Venice was to propose to the woman I'd want to spend the rest of my life with. Fifteen years later I kept my word. It was perfect.”
