Why ABC News Reporter Elizabeth Vargas Returned to Rehab
Elizabeth Vargas is back in rehab for alcohol dependency treatment. She checked-in to a facility while on vacation.
The ABC News reporter and “20/20” co-anchor released a statement explaining, "As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process. I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry."
Vargas, who is married to singer Marc Cohn and is a mother of two, said she is "committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease."
ABC News released a statement saying the network is “squarely behind her… We look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return."
Vargas, 51, was in rehab last fall, and later told “Good Morning America” about her battle with alcoholism, revealing that panic attacks led her to drink.
She said in the interview, "I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought, by starting to drink."
