Jimmy Fallon Masterminded 'West Side Story' Skit with Jay Leno
Late-night hosts Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon put their work woes to music Monday night with their own rendition of "West Side Story's" “Tonight.”
Rumors have been running rampant that NBC plans to replace “Tonight Show” host Leno with Fallon in 2014. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jimmy masterminded the "Late Night" phone call/PR move, proving there are no hard feelings between the two.
Poking fun at the headlines, the duo started the skit with a phone conversation. At one point Jay tells Jimmy, "I've been through this before. I'll admit I'm a little sick of all this."
After Leno tells Jimmy they are still friends, they launch into a duet of “Tonight,” with customized lyrics, including:
Fallon: "In the news all they say is I'm replacing you, they think I can woo the demo."
Leno: "So the network says here's an idea, pack your bags, take a hike, NBC-ya."
Leno later adds: "Tonight, tonight, I've got Fox on the line, or maybe I could take over for Dave."
The melancholy ending shows Jay looking out a window and telling Jimmy to “do a good show.”
THR reports that once Leno agreed to the skit, Fallon's “Late Night” team agreed to film the segment in L.A.
