‘Star Trek 2’ Trailer: ‘Into the Darkness’ Pays Homage to ‘Khan’
Captain James T. Kirk, Spock and friends are back for another intergalactic adventure in “Star Trek 2.” The new “Into the Darkness” trailer hints at lots of doom and gloom as the Starfleet takes on a “one-man weapon of mass destruction” played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
The new villain offers a sinister message in the trailer. "You think your world is safe. It is an illusion. A comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance."
Fans have long speculated that Cumberbatch's role is actually Khan from the 1982 favorite “The Wrath of Khan,” and now there's proof that director J.J. Abrams is at least paying homage to the film.
In the last 10 seconds of the Japanese trailer, two characters – presumably Kirk and Spock – are shown touching hands as Benedict's character asks, “Is there anything you would not do for your family?” If the scene plays out as it did in “Khan,” Spock will die!
So far, it is too soon to tell what other similarities the two films hold.
“Star Trek Into the Darkness” lands in theaters May 17, 2013.
