Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Katie Holmes attended an all-girls Roman Catholic academy and acted in their theater productions.
After a few modeling gigs, Katie was encouraged her to go to L.A. for TV pilot season and in her first audition won a part in the 1997 film "The Ice Storm." An audition tape was sent to "Dawson's Creek" creator Kevin Williamson in 1998 - and she was cast as series regular Joey Potter. The show ran for six seasons.
Holmes dated "Dawson's Creek" co-star Joshua Jackson during the first few years of the show, referring to him later as her first love. They remain great friends.
Holmes' early film career included starring roles in "Disturbing Behavior," "Go" and "Wonder Boys." She later starred in "Batman Begins," but did not reprise her role in the sequel "The Dark Knight."
Katie likes to run three to four miles a couple of times a week to clear her head.
She started dating "American Pie" actor Chris Klein in 2000 and was engaged to him from 2003 to 2005. They split in 2005. Holmes told a reporter then, "Chris and I care about each other and we're still friends."
The first movie she ever saw was "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial," and she cites "My Best Friend's Wedding" as one of her favorites.
Holmes met actor Tom Cruise a few weeks after splitting from Chris Klein in 2005. Katie once admitted she had a girlhood crush on Cruise. Two months after meeting, in June of that year, Cruise proposed to Holmes on top of the Eiffel Tower.

Katie and Tom became the parents of Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006 and married a few months later. Suri weighed 7 lbs. 7 ozs. and was 20 inches.
Holmes made her Broadway debut in the revival of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons" in September 2008.
Holmes also started a high fashion clothing line called Holmes & Yang in 2008 with longtime stylist Jeanne Yang.
