Kelly Clarkson Breaks Down on ‘American Idol’ — What Sparked Her Emotional Night?
Last night, Kelly Clarkson brought the house to tears while performing on the first live show of the final season of “American Idol.”
Clarkson, who was the first winner ever on the series, sang her song “Piece by Piece,” which tells the story of an absentee father. Some of the touching lyrics included, "I begged you to want me, but you didn't want to… And all of your words, they fall flat. I made something of myself and now you wanna come back. But your love, it isn't free. It has to be earned.”
By the end of the performance, Clarkson broke down emotionally while judge Keith Urban was caught tearing up listening to her sing. Watch the performance here!
After the crowd gave her a standing ovation, host Ryan Seacrest said, "You have us all in tears. The emotion that you exude always, but especially in that important song, it's just incredible.”
Clarkson apologized for breaking down and explained, "Super pregnant and hormonal. I'm pregnant, and it's nostalgic, and I can't believe it's the last season. I'm really sorry I just bawled.”
Kelly had written the song when she was pregnant with her daughter, River Rose. She is expecting her first son with husband Brandon Blackstock.
Following her performance, "Piece by Piece" skyrocketed to #1 on the iTunes Top Songs Chart and her album of the same name soared to #3 on the iTunes Album Chart.
