Troy's brother Tim told TMZ that Shafer died in his sleep at his Pennsylvania home in late April with no known medical conditions, leaving the family shocked.
Last week, Shafer was buried at a private funeral, which was attended by his family.
An autopsy was not performed. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook told RadarOnline.com, "We routinely do a toxicology. That's the easiest thing to do. An autopsy is only good in cases of gunshot wounds, trauma, that sort of thing. There is nothing to be seen in a drug death, for instance, by an autopsy, because we still have to wait for the toxicology.”
The toxicology report will be released in the coming weeks. Though they don't have the results yet, Cook noted, "Given the situation, we strongly suspect drugs were involved and a factor in his death."
After hearing the sad news about his passing, the show network told TMZ, "The DIY Network family is sorry to hear about the passing of Troy Dean Shafer, a dedicated, driven entrepreneur and restoration expert who was admired by everyone who worked on the series. We continue to extend our deepest condolences to Troy's family and friends during this difficult time."
Shafer, who graduated from Penn State University, is known for renovating and restoring historic homes in Nashville with his wife Becky. Before he rose to fame as a reality star, he had dreams of becoming a country singer.
He had completed two seasons of "Nashville Flipped" and also starred on two episodes of "Restoring Nashville" that aired last year.
