Sean Penn’s El Chapo Interview Regret: ‘My Article Failed’
Last night, Sean Penn was spotted grabbing dinner at celeb hot spot Giorgio Baldi, just before doing an interview with Charlie Rose in Santa Monica.
Charlie Rose met up with Sean to discuss his Rolling Stone article about drug lord El Chapo, who was recaptured by Mexican law enforcement last week.
In a preview of the “60 Minutes” interview, Penn shared his one “terrible regret" about the article. "I have a regret that the entire discussion about this article ignores its purpose, which was to try to contribute to this discussion about the policy in the war on drugs.” Watch!
He continued, "Let's go to the big picture of what we all want. We all want this drug problem to stop. We all want them — the killings in Chicago to stop… And how much time have they spent in the last week since this article come [sic] out, talking about that? One percent? I think that'd be generous. My article failed.”
The article was released just one day after El Chapo's capture, sparking some controversy. He wanted to clear the air, saying, "There is this myth about the visit that we made, my colleagues and I, with El Chapo, that it was — as the Attorney General of Mexico is quoted — 'essential' to his capture. We had met with him many weeks earlier… on October 2, in a place nowhere near where he was captured.”
When asked if he was scared that the Mexican government would come after him following the article, Penn responded, “No.”
Sean's entire interview with Charlie will air on “60 Minutes” on Sunday.
