Family & Friends Pay Tribute to Nipsey Hussle at Star-Studded Memorial Service
On Thursday, many gathered to pay their last respects to rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was gunned down in Los Angeles nearly two weeks ago.
Some of the big names, including G-Eazy, Big Sean, Big Boy, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Russell Westbrook and Meek Mill, were seen arriving at Staples Center for the memorial, TMZ reports.
During the service, Hussle was remembered through photos as Frank Sinatra's song “My Way” played. A livestream of the memorial is also available. Watch here.
His son Kross, 2, and daughter Emani also took the stage, joined by some of his family members.
After vintage footage of Nipsey from his childhood and teen years was shown, his father Dawit Asghedom and mother Angelique Smith came onstage. During their time on stage, Angelique stressed the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. While holding back tears, she opened up about the day that Nipsey was killed, saying she was in "perfect peace" when she heard the news.
She added, "I am happy, I'm complete, I'm strong. And if I can feel this way so can you... We have to be the light of change that we want in the world."
Nipsey's older brother Samiel Asghedom also got emotional while remembering his sibling. He started his speech, saying, "Everything he said in the music was who he was... He loved everybody. He loved who he grew up with and where he grew up and just wanted to inspire and always bring something back." While his voice was breaking, he said, "I don't want to be longwinded... I loved him."
He told Nipsey, "You made the world proud."
Nipsey's girlfriend Lauren London was the next to take the stage, sharing a old text she wrote to him when he was alive. Asking everyone to "bare with me," she said, "My pain is for my two-year-old who will not remember how much his father loved him."
She added, "This pain is really ours. We lost someone very rare to us. We won't ever be the same."
According to the memorial program, singers Jhené Aiko, Anthony Hamilton and Marsha Ambrosius are performing at the tribute. The program also included touching letters from Harden, DJ Khaled, Kendrick Lamar, LeBron James and The Game.
A funeral procession will follow after the service, traveling 25 miles through Los Angeles before arriving at Forest Lawn Memorial.
Tickets to the memorial sold out within minutes.
Before the memorial, "Extra" spoke with rapper Stix, who opened up about bonding with Nipsey.
More than a month before he was gunned down, Nipsey Hussle spoke with “Extra's” Tanika Ray at the Grammys, where he was joined by girlfriend Lauren London.
