Amanda Knox: Why She Lied

People magazine reports that Amanda Knox, exonerated last year by the Italian Supreme Court in the infamous murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher, is finally talking about why she initially lied when asked where she was at the time the crime was committed.

Speaking with "Nightline's" JuJu Chang, Knox — who now speaks out about the issue of wrongful conviction — admits she made up a false memory about being in the room when Kercher was murdered.

Knox chalks up her false confession to the abusive tactics of the Italian police, who she claims hit her on the head and yelled at her.

"A lot of cases of someone who was wrongfully convicted include a false confession, where someone was put through coercive interrogation techniques that led them to break," Knox says.

After being convicted of the crime twice, Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito succeeded in getting their convictions overturned before the Italian Supreme Court intervened and put a permanent end to the matter, citing "glaring errors" in how their cases had been prosecuted. Rudy Guede, a drifter who had also been convicted of the crime, was sentenced to 16 years in prison, but he could be released as soon as this year.
