Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Votes to Expel Harvey Weinstein, Brother Unloads

He may be an Oscar winner, but former The Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein is no longer a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — he's been removed from the body that bestows Academy Awards upon movie professionals.

In a statement, the Academy said Saturday, "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors met today to discuss the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and has voted well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him from the Academy. We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What's at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify."

The Academy's 54-member board is made up of such household names as Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg and Steven Spielberg.

Only one other Academy member has ever been booted out in the organization's 90-year history, "The Godfather Part II" and "The Godfather Part III" actor Carmine Caridi, who was expelled over his role in the dissemination of copyright-protected Academy screeners.

A slew of women have accused Weinstein of sexual coercion and harassment, and two, Asia Argento and Rose McGowan, have alleged he raped them.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein's brother Bob Weinstein unloaded on him, calling the scandal "a waking nightmare."

Bob went on to say he was well aware his brother was unfaithful to his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, but that he was shocked to learn Weinstein's sexual encounters were not all, allegedly, consensual. He said, "I actually was quite aware that Harvey was philandering with every woman he could meet. I was sick and disgusted by his actions. But that's the extent of what [I knew]. I said, 'Harvey, you're just cheating. Why do you constantly cheat?'... It was one after another and that I was aware of. But as far as being in a room and hearing the description in The New York Times? No way. No F-in way was I aware that that was the type of predator that he was."

Chapman is reportedly interviewing divorce lawyers.
