Star-Studded ‘Hand in Hand’ Telethon Raises Millions for Hurricane Victims
The stars turned out in a big way for the “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief” on Tuesday, which aired across the networks and on several cable channels.
The star-studded telethon, which included Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah, George Clooney and Julia Roberts, raised more than $14 million for the victims of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey.
Stevie Wonder opened the event with “Lean on Me,” and a political message, telling viewers, “Anyone who believes there is no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent.”
Beyoncé, a Houston native, also got political in a pre-taped message, saying, “The effects of climate change are playing out around the world everyday. Just this past week you've seen devastation from the monsoon in India, an 8.1 earthquake in Mexico, and two catastrophic hurricanes… We have to be prepared for what comes next.”
The benefit, organized by Scooter Braun, also shared stories of hurricane survivors and featured plenty of performances like Usher and Blake Shelton singing “Stand By Me” in Nashville, and Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Chris Stapleton, Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett singing “Texas” and “I Believe” in San Antonio.
Other stars working the phones included Jamie Foxx, Nicki Minaj, Gwen Stefani, Daniel Craig, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. DJ Khaled even brought his son!
