Katy Perry on 'Swish Swish' — Is It a Taylor Swift Diss Track?
Katy Perry's third single from her upcoming "Witness" album, the house-music diss track "Swish Swish," has fans guessing whether Katy's sights were set on rival Taylor Swift when she recorded the song.
The women have feuded in the past, a tiff that began when several dancers bolted a Taylor Swift tour to dance with Katy instead. With lyrics like, "So keep calm, honey, I'ma stick around / For more than a minute, get used to it / Funny my name keeps comin' outcho mouth / 'Cause I stay winning," it's tempting to frame "Swish Swish" as Katy's response to Taylor's "Bad Blood." ("Bish" is a drag term that means exactly what it sounds like.)
On "The Tonight Show," host Jimmy Fallon coyly asked Katy of the song, "Is that about anyone we know, or ...?"
Katy didn't take the bait, saying, "I think it's a great anthem for people to use whenever someone's trying to hold you down or bully you... 'Swish' represents a liberation from all the negative that doesn't serve you."
She recently told "Entertainment Weekly" her album is "empowered," and noted archly, "You can't mistake kindness for weakness, and don't come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone."
Actor Ruby Rose didn't get that message, taking to Twitter to call Katy out for the perceived attack on Taylor, writing, "I just think with everything going on in the world to go from rebranding as political activist only to ditch it and go low.. is.. a bummer." When fans piled on, Rose followed up with, "I've always stood up for the people I love and against things I think are cheap or mean spirited. That's not new. You have to follow your ❤️."
The song sounds like another hit in the basket for Katy Perry!
