Broadway Star Nick Cordero in 'Very Critical Condition' Post-Surgery
UPDATE: Cordero is now in "very critical condition" following emergency surgery.
Broadway star Nick Cordero, sick for more than a month with what has finally been confirmed to be COVID-19, is now "fighting for his life" against the virus — and his wife is asking fans for prayers.
People magazine reports that Cordero's fitness trainer wife, Amanda Kloots, took to Instagram Friday with a desperate plea for positive thoughts.
"My whole world has stopped. Please pray for my husband. Prayer warriors, prayer circles, whatever you've got," she wrote. "Energy, meditation, positive thinking. He is fighting for his life right now."
Referencing their 10-month-old son, she went on, "Elvis and I need you Nick Cordero. It's time to fight daddy."
Cordero, 41, began feeling unwell over a month ago, but his symptoms were all over the place. On March 31, Kloots wrote that he had been admitted to an ICU because he was "having a hard time breathing" after being misdiagnosed with pneumonia. Two false-negative COVID-19 tests steered them wrong, but a third confirmed that he had the potentially deadly virus.
Then, she received a heartbreaking call from her husband, who wrote that he was being put on a ventilator and would be too sedated to speak or communicate. The hope, in these cases, is that victims will heal without the distress of breathing difficulties — but he's been unconscious like this for nearly two weeks.
Once in intensive care, Cordero had seemed to improve. “He is doing BETTER! His body is responding well to the medication for COVID and he needs less oxygen from the ventilator," Kloots wrote at the time, but she has now confirmed that Cordero has taken a turn for the worse, calling his condition "very bad."
Cordero originated the lead role in off-Broadway's "The Toxic Avenger" (2009), was Tony-nominated for his performance in "Bullets Over Broadway" (2014), starred in "Rock of Ages" (2012), and has appeared in the hit "Waitress" (2016). On TV, he had a recurring role on "Blue Bloods" (2017-2018).
