Thandie Newton's Nightmare: Sexually Abused by a Director at an Audition
English actress Thandie Newton has a warning for young actors breaking into the business: Don't do whatever a director says if you feel uncomfortable.
People magazine reports she recently revealed to W magazine the nightmare audition early in her career that would later haunt her.
"A director, on a callback, had a camera shooting up my skirt and asked me to touch my t--s and think about the guy making love to me in the scene," she said. "I thought, 'Okay, this is a little weird,' but there was a female casting director in the room and I'd done weird stuff before so I did it."
Years later, a drunk producer made a strange comment about having seen her recently. When Thandie's husband pressed him on it, the man admitted he'd seen Thandie's racy audition tape. Thandie discovered "that the director was showing that audition tape to his friends after poker games at his house. And they would all get off on it."
The mother of two daughters is coming forward now to help young women make informed decisions. "... One person will read this and it will stop them getting sexually abused by a director. That's the person I'm interested in."
