No Cannes Do: Charlize Theron & Sean Penn Act Like They ‘Never Met’
On Friday, actress Charlize Theron and ex Sean Penn crossed paths at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, but made sure to keep their distance.
The two were on hand to promote their new film, “The Last Face,” appearing at a photo call at the star-studded festival. Charlize and Sean posed for photos, but stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and Javier Bardem may have made it less awkward for the former couple by standing between them. A source told People, "There was always someone in between them – at least one person. It was like they were on two separate orbits."
The insider added, "There was no contact between them. Not a thing. Really, like they'd never met... sort of like watching ice in a freezer.”
When Sean and Charlize talked with reporters, they did not acknowledge each other. The source explained, "[Penn] had on a poker face, and stared straight ahead when [Theron] spoke.”
Later in the day, Penn and Charlize continued to avoid each other on the red carpet at the film's premiere and were never pictured next to each other.
Sean directed Charlize in the movie while they were still a couple in 2014.
Charlize recently addressed rumors that she ghosted Sean before they split last year. She told WSJ, "There is a need to sensationalize things," she said. "When you leave a relationship there has to be some f--king crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f--king ghosting thing, like literally, I still don't even know what it is. It's just its own beast."
She elaborated, "We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it."
