Now You Can Take a College Course on Miley Cyrus and Her Twerkin’
Do you want to study all things Miley Cyrus? Here's your chance.
The liberal arts Skidmore College, a private campus in upstate New York, is offering a sociology course this summer called “The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media,” which examines Miley's stardom as it relates to today's society.
The instructor, Carolyn Chernoff, a visiting Assistant Professor in the school's Sociology Department, told Today.com, “It will examine the way women and their bodies are represented in society.”
She says it will also provide "a better understanding of the way we see social problems play out through mass media, the way even trivial things, like entertainment, reflect larger cultural conflicts on race, class and social inequality."
The Skidmore course isn't the only one focusing on celebrities. Rutgers University's Women's and Gender Studies department offers a course called “Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyoncé,” while the superstar's husband, Jay Z, was the focus of a Sociology of Hip-Hop class taught at Georgetown University.
Other celebrities being studied in college include Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen.
