Steve Martin: An Accomplished Banjo Player!
Funnyman Steve Martin is a man of many talents. In addition to his acting, singing and comedic chops, Martin is an accomplished, self-taught banjo player!
"Extra" caught up with him at a private performance of his lifelong passion for the banjo and bluegrass music. "I started playing when I was 17," the actor revealed.
Steve won two Grammys for his mountain music and he released a new bluegrass album, "Rare Bird Alert." Martin is also keeping busy with a new concert tour with the Steep Canyon Rangers - already a hit with fans. "We do a live show that is entertaining, has humor, but also has serious music."
"Because I didn't have a teacher, I wrote a lot of the songs myself and that's still what I do today," Martin said. The actor wrote a lot of his songs on the set of his new movie, due out in October, "with Jack Black and Owen Wilson called 'The Big Year,' and it's about competitive bird watching."
