John Legend on Making 'Higher' Music Video with Nipsey Hussle Just Days Before His Death
“Extra's” Renee Bargh caught up with John Legend on the first night of “The Voice” finale, where he opened up about his late friend Nipsey Hussle and more.
Legend, Nipsey and DJ Khaled had collaborated on the song “Higher” together, filming the music video just days before Hussle was shot and killed outside his Marathon clothing store in L.A. in March.
The song is featured on Khaled's new album “Father of Asahd,” and John and DJ Khaled performed it on the “Saturday Night Live” finale over the weekend.
Legend told Renee, “It was important for all of us. You know, DJ Khaled put us together on this song, which was really beautiful. [Nipsey] was telling a lot of his story, his family's story. Little did we know that three days after we filmed the video his life would be taken so quickly. To honor him and donate the proceeds to his family is a beautiful thing for Khaled to do and I am happy to be a part of it.”
While they were in the Big Apple, John's 3-year-old daughter Luna spent some time on the famous “SNL” stage, and his wife Chrissy Teigen posted a video of the toddler saying, “Live from New York.”
John shared, “I think Lorne [Michaels] should be booking Chrissy first because she should be hosting the show.” He added, “Luna has a lot of her mom's personality traits, so who knows what will happen with her in the future.” He went on, “She loves music she's funny, she's very vibrant and communicative, which is exciting around the house.”

As for “The Voice,” John is not worried about his one contestant going up against Blake Shelton's three artists, “Oh, he knows Maelyn [Jarmon] is a formidable challenge.” Insisting, “America has fallen in love with her voice and rightfully so.”
“The Voice” will crown a winner tonight on NBC.
