Video: Angelina Jolie Tears Up over Poignant Louis Zamperini Quote
Actress/director Angelina Jolie and husband Brad Pitt made their first public appearance together as a married couple, attending the Australian premiere of her film “Unbroken,” the drama she directed about Olympic runner and WWII POW survivor Louis Zamperini.
Jolie became emotional when a reporter from Nine Network recited a quote from the real Zamperini, who died earlier this year at age 97, praising the Oscar winner. Watch it here.
“Unbroken” is an adaption of the book written by Laura Hillenbrand, which chronicles Zamperini's amazing story. As a runner, he participated in the 1936 Olympics and then joined the Air Force to fight in WWII. While on a mission, his plane crashed into the Pacific, and he and fellow survivors were adrift for 47 days, only to be captured and imprisoned by the Japanese for two years.
Jolie had a chance to show Zamperini her production just before his death. She told reporters, "What made me know it was right is he had an emotional reaction to it, to seeing his mother again, to seeing his brother, to remembering the races… it was this gentle, beautiful, quiet moment. I felt very privileged to be reflecting on his life."
“Unbroken” opens in US theaters on Christmas Day.
