Why Shailene Woodley & Her Brother Hugged It out for Hours During Childhood

Actress Shailene Woodley bares her midriff in the new issue of Net a Porter's weekly digital magazine The Edit, where she opened up about her upbringing and Hollywood.

Woodley spent her teens in front of the camera on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager," but what was her childhood like? She revealed that she was forced to hug her brother on the front lawn of their home whenever they got into a fight. She said, "The whole time you're just seething, you're disliking this person with so much energy, but if you let go you have to stay there for an extra hour. That was the manipulative psychology my parents were into!”

Though her parents went through extreme measures, she has nothing but love for them. She reiterated, "My family is super-f**ked up in many ways, but they are also my everything. They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them. That's a lot more than most people can say about their families. I'm grateful for the sh*t that happened.”

Woodley has been acting for more than 10 years in Hollywood and is unafraid to bash the culture. She admitted, "I have a hard time having political conversations in Hollywood. Most people there are so privileged, they don't see the 99% of America because they don't have to.”
